NCT Dream and Aespa both succeed with remakes from 1st generation.
SM Entertainment successfully remake famous songs of its 1st generation idols through rookie groups Nct Dream and Aespa
NCT Dream released a new mini-album 'Candy' on December 19 last year. 'Candy', the title song of album of the same name, was released in 1996 by H.O.T. It was a remake of a song from H.O.T's 1st album. 'Candy', remade and re-releasede after 26 years, evokes nostalgia for the original song and at the same time creates a different charm by adding NCT Dream's Gen Z sensibility.
With this album, NCT Dream recorded 1,591,000 copies in sales in the first week of release, and topped various music charts. In particular, this achievement is even more significant because there was little to no promotions for the song due to the absence of music show broadcasts at the end of the year.
Previously, Aespa remade the hit song "Dreams Come True" by SES and enjoyed great popularity. The song also stayed at the top of various music charts for a long time.
"Dreams Come True," the title track of SES' 2nd album in 1998, is considered one of K-pop's most famous songs ahead of its time. The song, which already contained the Kwangya universe that SM had drawn, gave S.E.S. the image of a "music fairy". Aespa reinterpreted "Dreams Come True" in a different way by incorporating their own unique world into 'Dreams Come True'.
What's interesting is that both teams succeeded by remaking songs from the agency's first-generation senior groups. In addition, SM has been partnering with YouTube since last year to continue the 'SM Remastering Project' to reintroduce music from the 1990~2000s to fans around the world.
Amid the growing importance of IP in the content industry, the Y2K sentiment in the music industry is currently booming.
SM Entertainment, which has continuously produced top idols from the first generation of the Kpop industry to the present, is actively utilizing its strengths.
A kpop insider said, "Recently, the entertainment industry has been paying a lot of attention to IP (intellectual property rights) expansion and investing in technology to utilize it," adding, "SM is a company that already has abundant original content, and will make various attempts to prolong the life of it's IP in the future."
Mr Lee (33), an office worker who has enjoyed K-pop for a long time, said, "SM Entertainment has a long history and has a lot of good content, so it seems to be reproduced indefinitely," adding, "I hope they will remake more songs of first-generation idols."
